Irene Wakinekona Lum Ho

Irene Wakinekona Lum Ho

Auntie Irene was a sweet kupuna from Honolulu who married a Maui boy & settled there. Her husband's aunt was Maui Kumu, Elizabeth Lum Ho, whom she got to know. Auntie shared the fascinating story of how her family changed their last name. (1926-2008)

Auntie Irene came to our awareness while conducting research on Maui hula lines. It was suggested we talk with her to find out more about Elizabeth Lum Ho, a Maui Kumu who would often come up in discussions with Maui hula people. We were able to connect with Auntie and enjoyed a day of talk-story and she was a most pleasant and enjoyable host! Elizabeth Lum Ho was her husband’s aunt, and because Auntie Irene was around the ʻohana so much, she would hear about Maui hula families and kumu hula. We are grateful she shared her recollections and remembrances with HPS.
