Nona Beamer's Return to the Art Academy, Oʻahu 2001

This program was entitled "Nā Mele o Hawaiʻi"" and marked Auntie Nona's celebrated return to the Academy of Arts to share hula kahiko, as she did back in 1948 with her young group of Pele Dancers, brother Keola, and their cousin Mahi. The program in 1948 was primarily hula kahiko and launched the group on a 14-month journey across the continental U.S. to educate audiences as to what hula really was. In this 2001 program, many of the hula shared were from the 1948 program. Also appearing were hānai daughter, Maile Loo, and her hālau, musicians Uncle Van Horn Diamond, Kalei Ching, & Ronalyn Matautia, Nathan Kalama of Kauaʻi, and various recipients of the Beamer Scholarships at Kamehameha.
